What Killed Roger Rabbit? The Rabbit’s Final Chapter at the Library
The rabbit at the Childrens Library, was overweight and was breathing heavily…and when I am uneasy I make jokes. First, I hadn’t seen a rabbit that big before. Soo… I started making jokes like how do you get fat eating lettuce? And what is that? A big cat? And then again, I had a roommate in college who claimed to be vegetarian and was overweight. She would walk through the apartment eating heads of lettuce like one would eat an apple. That’s another story on the same par as my blog post, ‘A Thesaurus Isn’t a Dinosaur’. That’s another story; I digress, my pet experience had been with dogs, cats, horses, pigs and poultry. I had friends who had raised regular sized rabbits but none this size. This rabbit was huge! “The rabbit died" is not a reference to when one of my other college roommates got pregnant and went to the clinic, then came back exclaiming that the rabbit died. Where did that expression come from, anyhow? It was actually based on an old lab test where a rabbit was injected with a woman’s urine and observed changes in its ovaries. No, this was a huge rabbit in the cage in front of the librarian’s desk. It was black, lying on its side and breathing heavily. They only live for 5 to 7 years. I found out later that this one was like 8 …I guess he outlived expectations. It died, and the librarian cried when I returned and inquired about him when I noticed it missing. She said he was old and when we had seen him last, he was on his last legs, so to speak. (Dude weighed about 20 pounds), and she would take him home each night but loved to share him with the kids who visited the library. (Then I felt bad, right?) Nope, because now me and my kids were traumatized over the death of this very large rabbit.
It was a French Lop. Hailing from France and packing a punch at 15 pounds (or more!), these fluffy fellows are the product of a fancy French rendezvous between an English Lop and a Butterfly rabbit. Don’t let their size fool you; these rabbits are social butterflies who'll hop straight into your heart. Whether as pets or showstoppers, French Lops are the talk of the bunny town!
