American Bully vs. Pit Bull: Not the Same Dog, Not the Same Vibe

Pit Bull (Usually refers to American Pit Bull Terrier)

Breed Name: American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT)
Origin: United States
Purpose (Historically): Originally bred for bull-baiting, then dog fighting (now outlawed), but also used as farm dogs and companions.

Key Traits:

  • Lean and muscular build

  • Medium-sized (30–60 lbs)

  • High energy and athletic

  • Very intelligent and loyal

  • Can be dog-aggressive without proper training/socialization

  • Longer muzzle and more defined, “game-dog” appearance

Temperament:
Loyal, confident, determined. Very people-oriented and often great with kids, but needs consistent training and socialization.

American Bully

Breed Name: American Bully
Origin: United States (1990s)
Purpose: Developed as a companion breed with less aggression and more stability than its ancestors.

Key Traits:

  • Stockier and wider build

  • Heavier and shorter (typically 30–150 lbs depending on class: Pocket, Standard, XL, etc.)

  • Lower energy than APBT

  • Extremely affectionate and sociable

  • Shorter snout, broader chest, bulkier overall appearance

Temperament:
Gentle, loving, laid-back. Known for being very tolerant with kids and other animals. Often described as “couch potatoes with swagger.”

⚠️ Fun Fact:

The term "Pit Bull" is often used generically to describe multiple breeds, including the APBT, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, and American Staffordshire Terrier, which adds to the confusion.
