Who Are the Cats in Your Neighborhood?

The cat, sleeping then waking and giving a great yawn, goes out love-making. — From the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Elliot

I spotted them in the gravel parking lot by the ball field, as I was walking my dog Smokey, a black mouth Cur (who has since passed). It looked like a scene out of the Musical Cats, or maybe a grand cat summit. Some were rogue wanderers, while others embraced the free-range life, exploring the neighborhood or the woods behind their houses near the ball field. I'm telling you, there was a whole bunch of them! There were gray striped tabbies, tuxedo, orange tabbies, tortoise shell and an old cat that reminded me of the old cat Deuteronomy who was the wise and benevolent elderly Jellicle leader.

It was a crisp Fall Day, and it seemed like the sun had turned the gravel into a cozy cat hotspot. One by one, they emerged from the woods by the ball field. Picture this: a scruffy red tabby strolling with a mouse dangling triumphantly from his mouth. He was heading the opposite way, likely on his way home to present his human with a unique gift. Couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of the owner's reaction – been there with surprises from my house cats!

Russian Blue

These Russian cats boast striking blue coats, reminiscent of Lukey, the coolest cat ever! Lukey, not accompanied by his Grad student human, enchanted the neighborhood. Every morning, before heading to campus, Lukey's human would let him out. The neighbors couldn't stop talking about his friendliness, the way he'd greet you, let you pet him, and even accompany you on a stroll before embarking on his next adventure. When his human graduated, Lukey bid farewell to the neighborhood. Oh, how I miss that cat! It's incredible how such a small creature can enter your life and leave an indelible mark on the hearts of an entire community.

Orange Tabby

My Ernie boo is an orange tabby. He is my ride or die. I rescued him but I also think he rescued me too. He and Sheila E, the cattle dog travel with us on our trips back home to West by God Virginia, West Virginia.

Kwikpets-with crystals/just touch the box

So, who are the mysterious cats in your neighborhood? Tyson, our don’t look in the box cat, found his way into our lives through unexpected encounters. Ernie, Blade and Lily’s cards at the Petland said they were rescued in a rougher part of the city. Embrace the quirks of your local cat crew!

Tuxedo Cat

The tuxedo cat is characterized by its black and white coat resembling a formal tuxedo. This charming feline, found in various breeds, exhibits a dapper appearance with a predominantly black body and distinctive white markings. Known for their friendly and sociable nature, they make popular and endearing companions. My Menace was a tuxedo cat. I miss him. He and Princess were brother and sister. A gift from a co-worker after my first cat died.

Tortoise shell cat

Tortoise shell cats, often referred to as "torties," are unique for their vibrant, multicolored coats featuring a mix of black, orange, and sometimes brown colors. What sets them apart is their distinctive patchwork pattern, creating a visually striking appearance. Additionally, tortoiseshell cats are almost exclusively female due to genetics, adding to their rarity. Known for their strong-willed and spirited personalities, these felines captivate with both their appearance and distinctive character traits.

My Princess was a ‘Tortie’. I miss her. Her brother was Menace. She lived 17 yrs while Menace lived for 19yrs.

Abyssinian Cat

The Abyssinian cat is a regal and playful breed with a sleek, ticked coat, tufted ears, and expressive eyes. Known for intelligence and agility, they form loving bonds with their families, making them sought-after and beloved companions.

Lily My Main Coon

She rules the boys…girlfriend needs a wash, dry and fluff. One time when I was sitting with her side by side on the stairs, as I wasn’t paying attention to her, she reaches up and puts a paw on each side of my face and gently turned my head to face her.

A Spotted Himalayan

The Himalayan cat, affectionately known as the "Himmie," is like the best of both worlds—part Persian, part Siamese, and all fluff! They owe their luxurious, silky coats to their Persian lineage, while those striking blue eyes and stylish pointy coloring on their ears, face, paws, and tail? That’s all thanks to their Siamese ancestors.

These gentle giants are sweet, playful, and absolute attention magnets. If you’re looking for a furry companion that loves snuggles and pampering, they’re your perfect match. But don’t be fooled by their laid-back nature—owning a Himalayan means you’re also signing up to be their personal stylist, with daily grooming sessions to keep that fabulous coat in check!
