Who Are the Cats in Your Neighborhood?
The cat, sleeping then waking and giving a great yawn, goes out love-making. — From the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Elliot
I spotted them in the gravel parking lot by the ball field, as I was walking my dog Smokey, a black mouth Cur (who has since passed). It looked like a scene out of the Musical Cats, or maybe a grand cat summit. Some were rogue wanderers, while others embraced the free-range life, exploring the neighborhood or the woods behind their houses near the ball field. I'm telling you, there was a whole bunch of them! There were gray striped tabbies, tuxedo, orange tabbies, tortoise shell and an old cat that reminded me of the old cat Deuteronomy who was the wise and benevolent elderly Jellicle leader.
It was a crisp Fall Day, and it seemed like the sun had turned the gravel into a cozy cat hotspot. One by one, they emerged from the woods by the ball field. Picture this: a scruffy red tabby strolling with a mouse dangling triumphantly from his mouth. He was heading the opposite way, likely on his way home to present his human with a unique gift. Couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of the owner's reaction – been there with surprises from my house cats!
