Paw Patrol: Aaaugh! Hot Streets Burn Dogs’ Feet!

As summer heats up, it's crucial to keep our furry friends safe from the dangers of hot pavement. While we know not to leave pets or kids in a hot car, we must also be cautious about taking our dogs for walks during the hottest parts of the day.

Did you know that asphalt can reach scorching temperatures that can burn your dog's paws? On a sunny day, the pavement can be 40-60 degrees hotter than the air temperature. This means if it’s 85°F outside, the asphalt could be as hot as 140°F! Ouch! I've watched folks walking their dogs on hot days, and the poor dogs are whimpering and stepping gingerly while their owners, oblivious, are looking at their cell phones. Walking while distracted.

Hot Streets Can Burn Dogs’ Feet

To protect your pup’s paws, aim to walk them early in the morning or late in the evening when the pavement is cooler. Midday walks should be avoided if possible. Not only is it easier on their paws, but it’s also safer for their overall health, as dogs are prone to heatstroke.

A simple test to check if the pavement is too hot for your dog: place the back of your hand on the asphalt. If you can’t hold it there for more than five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog's paws.

Dogs Are Prone to Heatstroke

Some dogs are even more prone to heatstroke than others.

If your dog’s paws get burned, it's important to act quickly. First, move your dog to a cooler area immediately. Flush the paws with cool (not cold) water to soothe the burns. Avoid ice, as it can cause further damage. You can also use a gentle, pet-safe antiseptic to clean the paws.

  • First-degree burns: The skin will be red and sensitive.

  • Second-degree burns: There may be blisters and swelling.

  • Third-degree burns: The skin will be white, blackened, or leathery.

For anything beyond a minor burn, seek veterinary care immediately.

  • Stick to grassy areas when possible.

  • Keep walks short on extremely hot days.

  • Consider dog booties to protect sensitive paws.

  • Always carry water to keep your dog hydrated.

Remember, if it's too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Keep your pooch safe and comfortable during your summer strolls. Happy walking!
