How Do Dogs Know to Comfort Us When We Cry?

Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.” –Kabil Gibran

After my dad's passing, I maintained a facade of strength. Yet, upon returning home to the 'Burgh, the reality of his absence struck me deeply. With overwhelming sorrow, I finally allowed myself to cry. Sooo, I let loose sobbing. My dog immediately leaped from the couch and stuck her nuzzle right up under my folded arms and planted a big wet sloppy yucky kiss right on my lips. See The Best Kisses Are Yucky Dog Kisses!

Recently, while playing a game on my tablet recently, I jokingly mimicked an exaggerated cry. As if on cue, Sheila E, my cattle dog, poked her wet snout between the space between my tablet and arms, responding to my fake cry.

That thing she does…is it a cattle dog trait or do other dogs do it too? The extra thing she does is push her head through where the crook of my arms and forcing me to put my arm around her for a side hug.

So, after losing my dad, my dog's comforting presence became my solace. As tears flowed, she nudged her way into my arms, offering wet kisses and warm embraces. To be continued…

Reflecting on this moment, I couldn't help but marvel at the profound connection between humans and their canine companions. Sheila E's instinctual response to my emotional turmoil was a testament to the depth of our bond, transcending words and bridging the gap between heartache and healing.

But my dog's empathetic nature didn't end there. Recently, while engrossed in a game on my tablet, I playfully mimicked an exaggerated cry, unaware of the eyes that were watching me. Suddenly, as if on cue, Sheila E appeared, poking her wet snout between the space between my tablet and arms. It was as though she could sense the fake cry and felt compelled to offer her support in response.

As I pondered this curious behavior, I couldn't help but wonder: is this a trait unique to cattle dogs, or do other breeds exhibit similar tendencies? The way Sheila E pushes her head through the crook of my arms, forcing me to envelop her in a side hug, feels distinctly her own. Yet, I can't help but wonder if there are other dogs out there who share this endearing quirk.

In the end, whether it's a breed-specific trait or simply a unique aspect of Sheila E's personality, one thing remains clear: my dog's unwavering presence and unconditional love have been a source of comfort and joy in my darkest moments. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
